چکیده

This paper extends European research on generating cartographic base maps at multiple scales from a single detailed database. Similar to the European work, we emphasize reference maps. In contrast to the Europeans’ focus on data generalization, we emphasize changes to the map display, including symbol design or symbol modification. We also work from databases compiled at multiple resolutions rather than constructing all representations from a single high-resolution database. We report results demonstrating how symbol change combined with selection and elimination of subsets of features can produce maps through almost the entire range of map scales spanning 1:10,000 to 1:5,000,000. We demonstrate a method of establishing specific map display scales at which symbol modification should be imposed. We present a prototype decision tool called ScaleMaster that can guide multi-scale map design across a small or large range of data resolutions, display scales, and

The MurMur project: Modeling and querying multi-representation spatio-temporal databases

Successful information management implies the ability to design accurate representations of the real world of interest, in spite of the diversity of perceptions from the applications sharing the same database. Current database management systems do not provide representation schemes that preserve each perception while fully supporting their diversity and maintaining their consistency. This is a...

Map-merging in Multi-robot Simultaneous Localization and Mapping Process Using Two Heterogeneous Ground Robots

In this article, a fast and reliable map-merging algorithm is proposed to produce a global two dimensional map of an indoor environment in a multi-robot simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) process. In SLAM process, to find its way in this environment, a robot should be able to determine its position relative to a map formed from its observations. To solve this complex problem, simultan...

Multi-Scale Spatial Database and Map Generalisation

The constitution of multi-scale spatial databases is closely linked to map generalisation. Elements of a multi-scale spatial database include multi-scale data models, multi-scale data storage schemes, methods to generate multi-scale datasets and methods to access these datasets and present results. In this paper we proposed a formal multi-scale spatial data model with an information-rich struct...

Texture Recognition Using a Non-Parametric Multi-Scale Statistical Model

We describe a technique for using the joint occurrence of local features at multiple resolutions to measure the similarity between texture images. Though superficially similar to a number of “Gabor” style techniques, which recognize textures through the extraction of multi-scale feature vectors, our approach is derived fvom an accurate generative model of texture, which is explicitly multiscale...

Evaluation of Design Operators for Multi-published Map Delivery

The landscape of map design has changed rapidly over the last few years. This has occurred mainly due to the release of major multi-scale map products, such as Google Maps, Here, Bing and Mapbox. These products, providing the possibility to generate seamless multi-scale maps have ushered in a new way of exploring the Earth and man's impact on it – through the provision of timely and accessible ...
